Seat Covers Glossary
Custom Fit
A seat cover is called a custom seat cover when it is manufactured to fit automobile’s seat precisely. And this is done when it can be made for the exact year, make and model of your particular vehicle. A custom fit seat cover gives the best fit that can be probably rivaled by only the original factory-installed upholstery.
Friction
Friction is basically the rubbing together of two objects when either one or both are moving. This rubbing together of objects releases energy in the form of heat, and this eventually results in surface deterioration.
Neoprene
Neoprene was originally designed as an oil-resistant alternative to natural rubber. But soon it was discovered that it could be used in various number of other applications as well. It is the basic component in wet suits that are used in surfing and so you can imagine how water resistant the material is. It is also used in electrical insulation, fan belts, gaskets, noise insulation pads and even seat covers.
Pelts
Pelts are the animal skin that still has the hair, fur or wool attached to it. Pelts do not shed, like lesser fur seat covers, so it is very popular as seat covers.
Pink Slip
Pink slip is the American slang term for the title of a vehicle. Street racers often wager their pink slip, which means the winner gets to keeps the loser’s vehicle.
Polyester
Polyester is a strong, lightweight synthetic fiber that has long been in use for its water-resistance.
Semi-Custom Fit
A semi-custom fit means that it will fit 80% as well as a custom fit seat cover. A semi-custom seat cover should never be used on vehicles that have side impact airbags.
Universal Fit
A universal fit seat cover will work on any bucket seat. It does not give a perfect fit. Neither does it cover any particular year, make and model's seats. And so, these covers are never recommended because they do not offer a good fit.
UV / Ultra Violet
Ultra violet is an electromagnetic wave of light that is invisible to the human eye. The sun emits UV radiation, which is mostly filtered out by the atmosphere. But what does get through, though, is harmful to our skin as well as to our upholstery. |
